5 Signs Your Cat Needs a New Scratching Post
Cats scratch instinctively — it’s how they stretch their muscles, mark their territory, and keep their claws healthy. But if their scratching post is worn out, they’ll find something else to use. Like your sofa.
1. The Sisal Is Completely Shredded
A little wear is normal and actually good — cats like texture. But when the sisal rope is completely unwound or falling off in chunks, the post has done its job. Loose threads can also be a choking hazard, so don’t wait too long.
2. It Wobbles When They Use It
Cats put serious force into a good scratch. If the post rocks, tips, or slides across the floor, your cat will abandon it — an unstable post feels unsafe. A solid, heavy base is non-negotiable.
3. Your Cat Has Stopped Using It
If your cat suddenly starts scratching the sofa or carpet after previously using their post, that’s a signal. Cats prefer a post that gives real resistance — a flattened surface just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Cats need to fully extend their spine when scratching. The post should be tall enough for them to stretch their entire body upward — at least 60–70cm for an average adult cat.
